This paper will heighten on the background issues surroundingstress as well as, the steps that need to be taken by one&8217s self and the employer.According to The Random House Dictionary, stress isdefined as &8220physical, mental, or emotional tension. Jobstress occurs when demands are imposed upon the workers inwhich they canful not meet those demands, or when there are not seemly adequate supplies or information available for theemployee to perform their job as required (Paine, 1982, pg.68).In the book The Overworked American, author JulietSchor (1991) reports that 30 percent of adults take up reportedexperiencing high lev els of stress on a daily theme. at that placeis an even higher percentage of adults who have claimed tohave high levels of stress at least once or twice a week. In 1965, only a quarter of the population reported that theyare step on it to get things done resulting in high stresslevels. Today, that number has increase to one-third ofthe American population claiming they are rushed on a dailybasis (Schor, 1991, p.11).King 2 Prolonged severe stress can generate emotional depression,the exhaustion stage is not depression, but a physicalprocess. Long-lasting excessive stress can cause a varietyof physical illnesses. Among them high blood pressure,ulcers, colitis, arthritis, diabetes, stoke, and heartattack. The identical type and level of stress can effect individualists differently. It depends on the someone&8217sphysical condition (age, sex, genetic predisposition) and oncertain out-of-door factors (diet, or treatment with certaindrugs or hormones) as to the physical or emotiona l sufferingthat will occur.
