The Witness
Ann Petrys writing of The Witness is a despondent, assumed account of racial prejudice, violence, and moral subversion. The story centers on an Afro-American side of meat professor who relocates to Wheeling, New York, an all-white community following the spillage of his wife. After a year of teaching English to gamy school seniors in this township, the professor is asked by the local minister to assist in the mentoring of seven juvenile delinquents. This acceptance of common service devolves into a nightmarish experience for the professor who becomes twain victim of, and witness to, the depravity of the boys he hoped to reform. Written in 1971, following the civil rights movement, the story is an imputation of the hostility experienced by people who cannot conquer their own or anyone elses prejudices of guide and gender..
The theme of American race relations prevalent during the clock time of the writing begins in a moment of self-reflection with the professor:
